The town that gives the whole coast its name was once one of Italy’s four great maritime republics. The Cathedral of Sant’Andrea, with its striking staircase and Byzantine-Arab facade, is the town’s center of gravity. Amalfi works well as a base, with direct ferry connections to the neighboring villages that skip the road traffic entirely.<\/p>\n
Built higher up the hillside, Ravello offers the calmest version of the coast \u2014 and the view many consider the best in the entire region. Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, with their gardens overlooking the sea, are among Italy’s most striking viewpoints. In summer, Ravello hosts its famous festival, with classical concerts held right in the Villa Rufolo gardens.<\/p>\n
The coastal road is narrow, full of hairpin turns, and extremely busy in summer \u2014 driving isn’t recommended for most visitors. The more comfortable options: Direct flights from Athens to Naples take about 1.5 hours. From Naples, the coast is roughly 1\u20131.5 hours away by ferry or by road via Sorrento. Four days is enough for Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, with an extra day if you want to add a Capri day trip.<\/p>\n August on the Amalfi Coast means gridlock on the coastal road and packed ferries.
