October and November bring fewer crowds than the summer months, temperatures that make walking a pleasure, and cellars full after the harvest. It asks for good shoes and a rain jacket — and repays you with the most atmospheric city break on the Iberian peninsula.

Before you go: four practical notes

Arrive on a Wednesday. Many shops and restaurants close on Sundays and Mondays. Three nights from Wednesday means you’ll find most things open.

Take the metro from the airport. Straight to Trindade or Bolhão, a short walk from the centre.

Get an Andante Tour card if you plan a lot of journeys: €7.75 for 24 hours, €16.55 for 72. Trams and the funicular aren’t covered.

Pack layers, a rain jacket and sturdy shoes. Porto is all hills and cobblestones, and a shower can arrive on any day.

Day 1: azulejos and the centre

Start at Bolhão with a lanche — a stuffed brioche with ham and cheese, the local breakfast. Then the Capela das Almas with its enormous blue-tiled facade, and next door the renovated Mercado do Bolhão for fruit, fish and small plates.

Carry on to Rua de Santa Catarina, past the art nouveau facade of A Pérola do Bolhão and the historic Majestic Café. A little further down, São Bento station holds over 20,000 tiles telling the story of Portugal — one of the finest station interiors in Europe.

Head down to the river for the Igreja de São Francisco, with its gilded interior, and the Palácio da Bolsa. Sunset from the Jardim das Virtudes closes the day, with dinner at a neighborhood tavern — and if you’re brave, try the tripas à moda do Porto.

Day 2: art, gardens and museums

Spend the morning in Bombarda, the creative district: galleries, vintage shops, record stores and cafés worth lingering in. A couple of steps away are the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal, where peacocks wander freely and the municipal gallery is free to enter.

In the afternoon, two museums that couldn’t be less alike: the Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis, with ceramics, sculpture and painting, and the Centro Português de Fotografia, housed in a former political prison.

In the evening, the bars around Rua da Galeria de Paris — or a good cocktail if you prefer things quieter.

Day 3: wine and sea

Cross the bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia for the port cellars. Take a tour and tasting at one or two — there are century-old houses and modern ones with terraces over the river. Then climb to Jardim do Morro for sunset over the whole city; you’ll have company, but it’s worth it.

If you have time left, Matosinhos is fifteen minutes by metro: grilled fish, the ocean, and a cannery that runs tours with a sardine tasting.

And one day trip worth taking

With an extra day, the Douro valley is the natural continuation: terraced vineyards, a train along the river and estates open to visitors. In autumn the vine leaves turn red and gold — it’s the best time of year to go.

What accommodation costs

Porto remains one of Western Europe’s affordable city breaks. As a guide: a bed in a good hostel runs around €42–55, a mid-range room or apartment around €156–186, and something with a river view from €373 up.

Shall we?

At Penguin Travels & Tours we put together three- and four-day trips to Porto for October and November, with flights, accommodation in the centre and an optional Douro excursion.

Want an autumn city break that isn’t the same as everyone else’s? Stop by our office in Kalamata (Vasilissis Olgas 4) or call us at +30 27210 80701.

A three-day Porto itinerary with azulejos, port wine and Douro views — plus the practical details for October and November.

A three-day Porto itinerary with azulejos, port wine and Douro views — plus the practical details for October and November.
[438

post-12764","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-destinations-en
["GET
